QUESTION 4: REVELANCY OF POLITICAL NEWS IN CURRENT CLIMATE
THE olive branch that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin held out to his predecessor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has finally snapped. The continuity of the Kedah state government was Muhyiddin’s peace offering to the Mahathir faction of Bersatu but it was spurned. As a result, the Pakatan Harapan government has 58 collapsed and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir will be out as Kedah Menteri Besar for the second time in his political career. Mukhriz has referred to what is happening as “musim pengkhianatan” (season of treachery) after six assemblymen from his government jumped ship. (The Star, May 17, 2020)
How do you view the above situation? In
current situation, how relevant and urgent should the political manoeuvres be
addressed by the non-neutral media, when the people’s welfare and well-being
are at stake?.
With
the current political climate and the current crisis that we are facing I think
it is very important that any news is to be addressed with as little bias as
possible, the reason why I stated this is because of the fact that this is an
uncertain time. A time where no information is safe from bias, especially if
that info came from social media. I believe that any news outlet should try as
hard as they should have as little bias as possible. Which is why even
though I believe this type of political news should be reported, I think that
all news outlet should put a priority over news that affects the whole population of a country I.e. news regarding the development of Coronavirus.
One of the most important thing that
I believe all news outlet or any political figure should avoid is politicizing
an issue that should not be politicized, an example of this is when Donald
Trump, current president of the United States of America, decided to politicize the
issue of the Covid-19 pandemic by reframing the quarantine issue recommended by
WHO as a breach of their freedom. As a result of that political manoeuvre many
people in America are purposefully disobeying the recommendation brought out by
WHO by not wearing a mask, going out in a pack of group, etc. As a result, there
has been more than 7 million cases of Coronavirus in America and more than
200,000 American people have lost their lives because of Coronavirus, all
because their president decided to politicize an issue that should not be
politicized.
In conclusion, I am not against news
outlet reporting on a political issue. For politic, is important in the
development of a country, as long as the news outlet prioritize news regarding
the pandemic. I am, however, against the politicization of an issue that should
never be politicized. I hope this never happens because I do not want my
countrymen to die a pointless death just because somebody in the political
party or a news outlet thought it would be a good idea to politicize the idea
of health and crisis.
